Update about Haiti

Dr. David Cutler joins us today with the following update on the Saint John's Global Health initiative in Haiti:

The situation in Haiti remains uncertain, but we are moving ahead with plans to provide sustainable support to the HGD Foundation in Petit Goave. We are doing so with plans for a mission 29 June to 6 July, a fundraiser on Sunday 19 May, and a teleconference on Sunday 5 May to organize these events.

And while the Level 4 US State Department warning on travel to Haiti remains in place, there are also many signs that the situation there is improving, which bodes well for our upcoming mission. Check out the recent Port-au_Prince International Jazz Festival featured on PBS News:

The focus of our mission in late June will be to institute a novel program for screening and treatment of cervical cancer. Right now, no Pap smears or advanced treatment for this leading cause of young female deaths exist in Haiti. We will also be upgrading our solar electricity project, facilitating the use of medical equipment and rechargeable laptop computers used for telemedicine.

We hope to raise funds for these projects and the ongoing operation of the HGD Clinic at our annual fundraiser on Sunday 19 May. “Hike for Haiti” asks for a minimum $100 donation to the Saint John’s Global Health Program to participate in our two-hour walk into the wildflower-filled Santa Monica Mountains followed by a poolside brunch in Brentwood.

Sign up at our Eventbrite site to purchase tickets:

Or if you would prefer to simply make a donation, you can do so through the Saint John’s Health Center Foundation and designate your gift to benefit the Saint John’s Global Health Program:

Thank you all for your continued interest and support of our efforts!
